We are about clearing waste responsibly and using a fair, transparent pricing framework. We are also doing what we can by clearing fly-tipped rubbish when we can to help the environment.
So it is hardly surprising that we admire other people who are making a difference, and one of the most important, community-driven organisations in London is Bromley’s Greener Cleaner Hub in The Glades shopping centre.
The Hub is a focal-point for people who are doing something in their everyday lives about less waste, recycling, upcycling, preserving biodiversity, and community.
The Hub also contains a Library Of Things, a wall of cupboards containing items from carpet cleaners to sewing machines and hedge trimmers and even karaoke machines. All quality items in tip-top condition with full accessories, meaning that they can be hired affordably and used frequently, without the need for many, many people to buy them singly and keep them barely used, using up valuable resources in the process.
It is a busy place. Not only does it have numerous workshops and activities in the Hub itself, but you can also learn about related activities elsewhere in the borough, for example the newly started Beckenham Repair Cafe, as shown in the poster in the image above. When the Hub had a fundraiser recently, the Founder Parisa Wright – also a speaker at last years TEDx Beckenham – was interviewed by the Bromley Buzz podcast, listen here.
Seeing a range of items that would otherwise be dumped turned into new and renewed goods and garments and being sold is impressive, such as those above.
It takes a lot of skill and preparation to run a venue like this, and plenty of volunteers (150 or more). There are numerous ways to get involved with the Greener Cleaner Hub – handily in one place on their website. For a further insight into the green groups of Bromley, there is also the Bromley Environmental Network.
